UAT
User Acceptance Testing, what is it?
and more importantly, why should a business invest time, energy and resources in its implementation?
User Acceptance Testing: 'typically, the final phase in a software development process in which the software is given to the intended audience to be tested for functionality'.
UAT is either done by making the software available for a free trial, typically over the Internet, or by using an in-house testing panel comprised of users who would be using the product in real-world applications. Alternatively, an external UAT expert may be 'parachuted in' to give totally impartial, no holds barrred feedback on the usability of the product.
UAT is done in order to get feedback from users to make any final adjustments to the programming before releasing the product to the general public.
UAT is also called beta testing, end-user testing or application testing.
7 Risks
As a business, you're running yourselves ragged just trying to complete a number of new projects, on-time and to the satisfaction of your client.
Ask yourself:
- 1. Do you have time to complete all pre-launch testing?
- 2. Are you happy that your product is robust, and that you've tested for every eventuality?
- 3. Do you test from all perspectives? Expert, experienced, new user?
- 4. Can you afford for your new software to fail, post-launch?
- 5. What costs would be incurred post-launch to 'retro-fit' a solution?
- 6. Can you afford the potential repercussions of 'legal action' or 'bad press'?
- 7. If you had the ability to test an item 'to destruction' would you?
Most organisations just about have time to complete the job on-time and on-budget, though sometimes even this can be a struggle.
It comes as no surprise that such a high number of new products fail within weeks, days, or sometimes even hours of launch; leading to product recalls, additional cost, potential legal action or more importantly...........loss of reputation and future orders or reduced sales revenue.
